Traditional block tutorial Crows Foot
Crows Foot is a lovely traditional block from 1896. It is also known as a Large Star block.
TUTORIAL - Crows Foot
12" block (finished)
Cut
2 x light squares 6"
2 x dark squares 6"
(These are for 8 at a time hsts for a total of 16. I work with minimal waste so these are tight, if that stresses you out, cut them a quarter inch larger!)
2 x light squares 4.5"
2 x dark squares 4.5"
2 x light squares 2.5"
2 x dark squares 2.5"
First make 8 at a time hsts with your 6” squares, marking the diagonal lines as in the photos. Then sew 1/4" on each side of the line. Then cut through the drawn lines AND through the center horizontally and vertically using the top of the square and the center cross as a cutting guide. Press and trim each hst to 2.5"
Lay out your block like the image and sew into four quadrants. The sawtooth triangles are directional so make sure you double check which side to sew.
Sew into half blocks and then whole. The block will now measure 12.5”.
Enjoy :)
