Traditional block tutorial Millers daughter

TUTORIAL - Millers Daughter

10" block (finished)

Cut

1 x white square 6"

1 x lilac square 6"

(These are for 8 at a time hsts. I work with minimal waste so these are tight, if that stresses you out, cut them a quarter inch larger!)

8 x white squares 2.5"

4 x lilac squares 2.5"

4 x orange squares 2.5"

1 x yellow square 2.5"

First make 8 at a time hsts, marking the diagonal lines as in the photos. Then sew 1/4" on each side of the line and cut through the drawn lines AND through the center horizontally and vertically using the top of the square and the center cross as a cutting guide. Press and trim to 2.5"

Lay out your block like the image and sew into rows.

Then sew rows together into the whole. The block will now measure 10.5" unfinished.

Other names for this block (depending on the colour placement) include, Sisters' choice, Fathers choice, Farmers daughter, Friendship block, 4X Star, Churn dasher, Five patch star, Star and Cross, New England block, Greek cross and more recently named a Genny and Ruth block
